Theme: Creativity as Sovereign Essence — Imagination as Liberation

Dear Sisters,

Creativity is the act of making—bringing something into form that did not exist before. Imagination is the vision that precedes it, the capacity to dream beyond what is, to see futures not yet realized. Together, they are the foundation of liberation: imagination as vision, creativity as practice.

Our foremothers carried creativity in fragments—songs, stories, braids, quilts, prayers—woven even in the midst of labor and denial. Creativity was survival, but it was also prophecy. As Nina Banks reminds us, Black women’s labor has always been central to economic freedom, yet their creativity was often suppressed or unacknowledged (Banks, 2022). When we nurture imagination today, we reclaim sovereignty and build new structures of freedom.

This September, instead of letting go, I invite us to build creative foundations and outlets for healing. Imagination is not frivolous—it is essential. It is how we reclaim what was denied, how we heal, and how we prepare for transformation.

Reflection Questions:

• How do I honor the creative rituals my foremothers carried?
• How does my imagination today reclaim what was denied to them?
• What new visions can I create as acts of liberation?
• How do I express my creativity?

With love and vision,
Sunya
