My quiet offering for June:
Abundance, Freedom, and Responsibility
Dear Sunya,
By the end of June, blossoms ripen into fruit. Leaves fully unfurl in brilliant shades of vibant green. What was once tender growth becomes nourishment, not only for ourselves but for those around us. June ushered in summer and abundance—of gathering, sharing, and celebrating together.
But let’s be real. Abundance isn’t just about prosperity. It’s about freedom. It’s about self-determination. It’s about the triumphs of our ancestors. Honoring what they laid down by picking up their truths to carry on their legacies. This month, Juneteenth and July 4th sit side by side. Juneteenth reminds us of the power of self-emancipation, of communities launched to claim freedom even when systems denied it. July 4th celebrates independence, yet here we are—250 years later—watching record numbers of people lose their freedom through incarceration, and strategic job loss-while others see their rights and safety stripped away piece by piece. Many of those are within our own families and communities.
As Black people, our DNA already carries this reality. We inherit both the trauma of bondage and the triumph of survival. That memory lives in us, reminding us that freedom is never guaranteed—it must be practiced, protected, and renewed. And that renewal doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in community. It happens when we care for one another, when we refuse to let the weight of these times crush our spirit.
So I'm asking you, from my heart:
How will you honor freedom in your daily life, not just in theory?
- What commitments will you make to sustain y/our community’s freedom?
- How will you treat your own self-care as an act of freedom, not indulgence?
- Where can you embody abundance as care, not just as gain?
Abundance is our collective harvest. Freedom is our collective responsibility. When we share both, we honor the cycles that brought us here and sustain the communities that will carry us forward.
I'll be back soon.
With Love,
Sunya
