Renewal and Blooming: Expanding Into Spring

Dear Sunya,

The cycles of the year remind us that each season carries its own wisdom. Fall taught us the importance of letting go. December and  Winter invited us into stillness and reflection. Now, with Spring, we step into renewal and blooming. April has felt like a culmination of the earlier cycles—letting go, stillness, trust—and a turning toward expansion and visibility.

Renewal is not just about starting over—it’s about expanding. It’s about allowing what has been planted in honesty, love, and trust to take root and grow. Blooming is the visible expression of that inner work.

For me, celebrating the new year at the spring equinox has always felt right. Guided by my mother’s and grandmother’s affinity for the moon’s cycles, and grounded in my own childhood memories under the big skies and vast expanses of Kansas, I’ve learned to trust that renewal comes in a certain rhythm. The elements remind me that I am supported, and that blooming is a natural response to rest, release, and faith.

 Expansion and Creativity

During times of change, my instinct has often been to hunker down and work harder. Yet I am convinced that more effort is not the answer right now. Instead, I am learning to work smarter and to rest with intention, curating the conditions that allow me to spend more time in my studio while also nurturing other forms of creativity.

One of those practices has been with Zefirah, (from the word zephyr) the professional open-holed flute I gifted myself during the pandemic. With its high silver content, it was the instrument I had always dreamed of owning. I still sound far from polished on it—but the practice itself is a gift.

Last year, I also began Flamenco lessons here in Latin America, part of my ongoing research into African and Indigenous cultural influences in food, music, and dance in the Americas. I had always wanted to experience Flamenco, and I quickly discovered that the tapping combinations, body warm-ups, inner muscle control, and memorized choreography offered a holistic exercise for body, mind, and spirit. It has challenged my brain, expanded my lung capacity, and increased my flexibility.

What I did not anticipate was the opportunity to perform alongside seasoned professional flamencas—most of whom are the age of my children. And so this spring, in another country, with less than a year of instruction, I find myself blooming and expanding in new ways as a performer. Am I great at it? Not yet. But it is part of my overall health, well-being, and joy.

This month, I invite you to reflect:

What have you released that now makes space for renewal?

  • Where in your life are you ready to expand?
  • How will you honor your own blooming this season?

Renewal is our birthright. Blooming is our declaration. When we expand in authenticity, we embody the fullness of our cycles and the strength of our becoming.

Tomorrow I host our first Sovereign Session: Conversations, community, and connection. No pressure, a place to check in, be seen, share, gain strength and validation in the midst of so much going on. My only expectation is that we show up in love.  If you cannot make tomorrow's chat, there will be others. You will find the link below.

With joy in the season,

Sunya and Zephirah (on right)
